No News Today

I love my devotion time! It is usually very quiet, still dark but there are shades of purple hues becoming visible as I look over the mountain in front of me. Part of this time starts with making notes from yesterday and then I move into today’s weather and headlines. One day last week as I scanned the headlines there were no terrorist posts, no angry he-said items, not a single listing of rich becoming richer and no report on COVID.

At first, I gave a sigh of relief but then I had a frightening thought, this can’t be right. Maybe the rapture occurred and I was left behind. Not so! As I sat there and looked at the day’s major, rather-boring news, I was immediately overwhelmed with the idea that there has to be good news in the world. Somewhere, even close by, there are people doing kind, generous, loving acts for others that never get mentioned.

While the world will not consider those things as important, deep in our hearts we know. We are well aware of the impact of good deeds. How about the prayer we frequently offer for the friend with COVID, the donations to the food bank, or the meals we prepare for the neighbor who broke her wrist? These are all things that don’t make even the local news but they do make eternal news.

We all are aware that the media sensationalizes events. But what would happen if for a week, they could not report any bad news? What would we do? Now we already know that bad things happen in this fallen world but I, the optimist, believe that there are still more good things that could be found. After a couple of days, would you become suspicious? For some, it would not even take that long.

Before all this technology took over, news traveled by letter or word of mouth. By the time the receiver opened the letter or heard about it, it was old news. Today we can watch it as it unfolds in front of us. Even as we view it live, there are different opinions that are offered. Sometimes I think it was better not knowing and just being able to mind our own business in our family, community and local area.

There is always news! Our joy comes from being part of sharing and caring for others which is the Good News put into action.
