Time to Eat

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4

Twice a day I stand in the yard and yell, “Time to eat!” and the deer come running from every direction. We have spent one winter together, and they have enjoyed carrots, apples, and sweet potatoes along with deer corn and sweet feed. The most I’ve fed at one time is 31! But now that spring has sprung, the numbers are more reasonable—maybe 16-18 each feeding. Their slender bellies are podding out with new life.

Each time I am out there inviting them to come and eat, I am reminded that we all must eat to survive. This morning however, I am not talking about food that we eat, but about God’s nourishing Word. His Love letters are packed with stories, guidelines, words of grace and forgiveness that can satisfy any hungering soul.

When is your time to devour His Word? I am an early riser and enjoy the quietness in the house about 4AM. Starting with my own personal devotions sets the tone for what I write later. Without my own brief (but intense) study, my mind is slushy! I can easily slip and slide without focus.

Keeping our focus on Him takes desire, effort, and practice. For those of us who cannot even get through a prayer without derailing and making a mental grocery list or logistically planning how to get kids/grandkids to the next activity, a day fixated on His Word, blessings, and greatness seems nearly impossible. Where does one even begin? Yet, this is what we are asked to do!

Jeremiah explained it this way: When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty (Jeremiah 15:16, NIV). There are many verses that refer to nourishment of our souls and they all seem to hinge on one thing—God’s Word. There are significant benefits and multiple blessings from feeding on His Words of truth and love.

As I watch the deer move around me, I think about their dependence upon nature and me. Am I dependent upon Him that much? Am I totally convicted as I enter each day?

The banquet table has been prepared. Come, it’s time to eat!

Bread of Life

Gracious Father, You alone are worthy of praise for all that You provide. Help us to seek You with a ravenous appetite that won’t be satiated. Please show us the way. AMEN.
