Lesson Learned from a Rainy Day
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy. Psalm 103:2-4
Another rainy day! Ugh! My mood was somber as my body ached with pain. No walk today and most likely a pain pill later. I am aware that what I’m experiencing is just a momentary thing and it won’t last forever, but my outlook toward life was in the hopper.
Something had to change. Staring out from my writing desk, I watched the birds, squirrels and chipmunks continue to come time after time to get food. They were soaked but their desire to eat and survive was stronger than the discomfort of their wetness.
It’s fascinating how nature can bring us these life lessons. I was reminded to focus on my strongest desire. But what was it? Maybe to find peace and joy in each day. It could be not to feel pain anymore when I move. How about being able to go upstairs or drive? Sleeping in a bed instead of a recliner sounded good.
I continued watching the birds and other critters at the feeders. Nothing seemed to bother them. Why was I feeling so downhearted? The tears came but I don’t know what started them. When there were no more sniffles and the trash can was full of tissues, I somehow felt better.
Surely it was because I felt His loving embrace of compassion. Then we silently watched those beautiful birds and cute rodents gathering food together. Finally, He spoke lovingly:
JESUS: You need to pay attention to My creatures for they are living well.
ME: I see that. They aren’t complaining like I’m doing. They don’t feel sorry for themselves!
JESUS: Very true, but they cannot think as you do either. They also have predators, need shelter, and must search for food.
ME: So, what are You telling me?
JESUS: Do not forget all My benefits, for I am the one who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy. Yes, My child, I am telling you to remember Me each moment of each day.
ME: You want me to recognize and reflect on Your goodness?
JESUS: Yes, and smile. Pray for others in worse condition than you—and there are many. I love you in your humanness but now reach beyond.
ME: I will certainly try!
