Food for the Soul
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:17 (NIV)
My mouth is watering just looking at this pic because this too is my go-to comfort food. Although I must admit that my son-in-law makes the best in the world! Grilled cheese and ice cream cones rank right up there on my list. Why? Probably because memories were made while eating those things. Heidi Gaul (Mornings with Jesus) shares her own message about feeding the body and soul.

Macaroni and cheese is my soul food of choice. As I spooned an amply serving into my bowl, I wondered how such a simple combination of pasta, cheese, and a few other ingredients could feed my heart as well as fill my belly. This dish is like a warm hug.
My daughter responds in the same way to chicken and dumplings, and my husband gets all cozy inside over hot dogs. Many of us have memories tied up in these dishes, recollections of times gone by when we felt safe, loved, and completely satisfied.
Three times Simon Peter mouthed the words “I love you” to Jesus, but Jesus wanted more. He wanted Peter to feed His sheep to take the extra step and share the Bread of Life with those starving for assurance of eternity.
I enjoy offering love in a dish to old friends and new ones, be it ooey-gooey pasta or a cup of homemade soup. I’m hoping sweet memories will fill the person’s heart the next time they enjoy the same food, wherever they are.
But more than feeding them tasty carbs, my goal is to satisfy their hunger with the original, true soul food. And I pray that I honor Jesus’s request to feed his flock in both body and soul.
FAITH STEP: Next time you entertain, pray for your guests as you prepare food. Be ready to offer a serving of the Bread of Life along with the meal.
Loving Lord, thank You for feeding us with Your word. Please give us strength and courage to share it with others. AMEN.
