We Are Them!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1 (ESV)

We have all heard these words come out of our mouth, “I am no saint!” Spoken as a true human with imperfections, regretted decisions, and we grieve over lost opportunities. Often, we hear the sentence, “I want to be like so-and-so when I grow up.” Ignoring the fact that we are in our senior years already makes this humorous. But there is still honesty in both statements.

Pastor Liz Jackson made a comment in her recent message (All Saints Day) that truly made me stop and think. “We are them!” Ponder that for a moment.

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8, NIV). How very true! Many of us long to see our loved one, friends, and family that have already joined that great cloud of witnesses. However, while we are alive, we are witnesses too!

As we pray for others, offer a helping hand, share the love of our Savior, and sing His praises, we are witnessing. Some day we will join that great cloud after our final breath. Until then, we must continue our earthly journey with great expectations.

Being a saint isn’t easy. I am convinced that it includes being an active member in a Bible-preaching church, using talents and spiritual gifts for His glory, having an insatiable hunger for a fuller relationship with Him, and diving deep into His Holy Word. But there is still more. If we do not share what we believe - this Good News of Jesus Christ, we are being selfish.

Saints are not self-seeking. This is not a guilt trip. Let these words serve as a reminder to tell others about the goodness of God.

There is always room for one or two more saints on this highway to heaven.

Song of the Saints

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving all Your saints. Teach us how to share our faith and beliefs with others as we inch closer to that greater cloud of witnesses. AMEN.
