Jesus Alerts

This is what the LORD says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17 (NIV)

If you were to look up modern technology, you would never see quotes from me or my photo. I am technology challenged! I can certainly do the necessary research basics to write a devotion, find a pic and great song to support the message but after that, I am rather lost. When my mouse does not work, neither do I (and I have a touch screen laptop). Barbara Lumpkins Walls (Mornings with Jesus) has a creative message about Jesus alerts.

Modern technology really blows my mind. We’ve got coffee pots that start themselves in the morning so we can have a hot cup of java as soon as we get out of bed. Navigation devices tell us how to get to where we need to go. Cars can start and drive themselves. Lights flick on automatically in our homes before we enter. But the one tech tool I truly love is my smartwatch, which can seemingly do everything.

My watch tells me when I’ve sat too long and need to get up and move. It even tells me when I’m in an environment that is too loud. One day after receiving an alert from my watch, I thought, Wouldn’t it be nice if Jesus alerted me to things I needed to pay attention to? But then He reminded me that He does! It’s through that still, small voice inside me that says this is the way, now walk in it (Isaiah 30:21). Sometimes it’s the voice of a friend or a stranger that speaks directly to a problem I’m facing that they know nothing about. And other times it’s through His words that seem to leap off the page as I read Bible passages. Indeed, Jesus speaks to me in various ways. I just need to be smart enough to listen for Him as He sends His alerts.

FAITH STEP: Be on the lookout today for Jesus’s voice. Is He speaking to you through the Bible? Through conversation with family or friends? Or in some other way?

Still Small Voice

Loving Lord, thank You for sending us alerts that don’t need WI-FI or any technology. You have wired us to You. Teach us to listen for Your voice. AMEN.
