God, Can You Hear Me?

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Psalm 91:11-12 (NIV)

Daily I pray for our children and grandchildren and friends. I ask for God’s protection and for good health for each of them. There are times when I wonder if He wants to hear from me—again and again. Then there are moments when I wonder if He hears me at all. But I continue to lift them all up to Him and trust Him with their lives. Jennifer Grant (Mornings with Jesus) shares how our loving God heard and answered her.

My four children are young adults and no longer live at home. I pray for them every day, asking that angels will keep them safe, but I rarely have confirmation that my prayer is being answered.

Early one morning, my son Ian’s name popped up on my phone. When I answered, he spoke evenly.

“Mom, I’m fine, but I’ve been in an accident,” he said. “I think my right hand might be broken.”

He had been riding his bike to work, and a car had hit him. I drove to the hospital, expecting he’d be dressed and ready to leave but instead he was in an emergency room cubicle hooked up to an IV and a series of other machines. He’d underplayed the seriousness of the accident, not wanting me to panic.

Over the next hours, X-rays, ultrasounds, bloodwork, and other tests showed that he had been miraculously protected. After he was treated and released, I drove him home with a broken hand, a fractured foot, minor lacerations, and a few stitches. In my car, Ian told me about the accident and how a passersby stayed with him as he lay under the car and waited for the ambulance.

“One woman just sat down on the street, right beside me. She didn’t say much, but I felt like I was being wrapped in peace.”

A knowing washed over me. Thank You, Jesus, for protecting Ian and sending an angel to watch over him. My prayers had been answered.
