Mother's Day

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 3 John 1:4 (ESV)

Mother’s Day was established as the second Sunday in May, 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. Since then, this popular Halmark day has become sensationalized by jewelry sales, restaurant specials, promises, unique gifts, and treats. Yes, the children bring her breakfast in bed (with dad’s help) and the homemade cards and flowers await her entry into the kitchen.

All she really wanted in those early days was some peace and quiet! Too soon the children are off to college or are sleeping in later than she does. That does not negate the love that each child feels for their mother. With the aging process, it’s a deeper kind of closeness.

For the Proverbs 31 woman, your heavenly crown awaits you. However, since 1914, there have been many mothers who have fallen way short of this pictured woman. Some have never even conceived. While the day may feel hollow, wrap your love around family members, students, or neighbors. Who knows, they may need to be hugged.

This particular day can bring many unhappy memories. For those who have lost children, be encouraged. Psalm 34:18 says this: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

Perhaps you weren’t the best mom, your heart is full of regrets and apologies. While your child/children are still alive and breathing, there is time to make amends. Open your heart to them and be transparent. Psalm 147:3 tells us: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

Maybe you are the child of a mother who was far less than June Cleaver (Leave It to Beaver). Your heart still yearns for better memories. Find a loving Christian mentor who will guide and nurture you.

Mother’s Day is coming whether you like it or not. Cutting back on your expectations will prevent disappointments thus making the day bearable.

Talk about your thoughts and feelings. God already knows but tell Him again anyway! Then, just sit quietly and listen. Feel His love flow through you. Thank Him for His Presence and all the blessings He has poured upon you.

One of the greatest joys in my life was offering communion to my family. I’ve lived a wild and wooly life but I rest assured knowing I’ll be in eternity with them. For those who don’t have that assurance, keep praying.

Mother’s Day Song

Gracious God, thank You for all mothers. You created a way for us to be here and we give You glory and praise. Help all women to feel valued. AMEN.
