Stay Awake

Do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit…And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake. Mark 13:11, 37 (ESV)

I am preparing to go to my 55th high school reunion. I have not been since graduation although I see lots of classmates in and about town. Probably there will be lots of small talk going on during this event. And I’m not too crazy about it but that’s how it goes until the party afterward when people dive under the surface talk. My goal? Stay awake with the right words to say. Erin Keeley Marshall (Mornings with Jesus) shares a time sensitive message for me. I am sure we can all identify in some way.

I find small talk stressful. I love having deep conversations, and when I feel out of my lane, words often fail. Although some public speaking coaching has helped in these situations, I want nothing more than to walk away from interactions outside my comfort zone.

These verses in Mark 13 offer empowerment for knowing what to say. Jesus assures His disciples that the Holy Spirit will provide the right words when they’re confronted for their faith. I believe a similar heart applies for all situations when we need wise words.

Scriptures detailing the events before Easter are loaded with Jesus revealing the truth of people’s heart. …Jesus responded with two wise words that are effective even when offered in silence: “Stay awake.”

Stay awake. A directive that carries no emotion yet is full of deep meaning.

This command empowers us to see through deception. It’s practical and unapologetic about boundaries. It’s responsible and employs common sense. It’s respectful and assumes we’re capable of obedience.

It tells us that Jesus will provide, even in the most difficult and stressful situations.

FAITH STEP: What do you need today to stay awake? What situations needs wise words or response or initiation? Meditate on Mark 13:11, 37 and listen for the Holy Spirit.

Wide Awake

Almighty God, help me to stay awake so I can discern the Holy Spirit’s words, even when my own won’t come. As I recognize Your voice, I will trust You to cover the rest of the conversation. AMEN.
