Off Kilter

I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. Proverbs 4:11-12 (NIV)

Being a roly-poly kid, I did not participate in too many races or activities that required much coordination. I cheered my favorites over the finish line but taking part was just not my thing. Perhaps that is why I am still not into sports today. Karen Sargent (Mornings with Jesus) tells us about her favorite races.

As another school year winds down, I remember how much I anticipated field day as an elementary student. My favorite event was the three-legged race. My friend Sherry and I practiced at recess, my left leg bound to her right leg. I loved the smooth stride when we ran in step. But if we got out of step, our bodies jarred side to side, knocking into each other. We had to stop and adjust, or we’d fall flat on our faces.

Walking with Jesus is a bit like a three-legged race. When I cling close to Him, my steps feel fluid, making it easier to float over the bumps in the day. But recently, I was out of step.  A new grandbaby, traveling, work deadlines, and coffee dates made it difficult to commit my mornings to Jesus. When I sat and opened my Bible, my eyes were in Ephesians but my mind wandered to what I needed to accomplish. Sometimes I settled for a quick moment with a Bible app or promised Jesus I’d meet Him for prayer in the car…unless I forgot. “I’ll do better tomorrow,” I’d tell myself. But the tomorrows started adding up.

And so did the jarring and knocking of being out of step. It was time to make an adjustment. I thanked Jesus for remaining beside me, asked forgiveness for neglecting my Partner, and renewed my commitment to start each day in His presence, practicing for the race ahead.

FAITH STEP: Are you out of step with Jesus? Is it time to adjust? Stop right now, turn to Him, and get back in step.

Step by Step

Loving Lord, thank You for Your patience and forgiveness when we get buried in the details of life. Your gentle voice calls us back to the right path. Help us to stay in sync with You. AMEN.
