First of All

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone... 1 Timothy 2:1 (NRSV)

This verse reminds us that prayer is not just a personal discipline, but a community responsibility. Paul begins his instruction to Timothy with urgency, “First of all”, to emphasize the priority of prayer in the life of a believer and in the church.

We are not only called to pray for ourselves or our loved ones but for everyone—including those we disagree with, those in leadership, the hurting, the lost, and even those who oppose us. Paul uses four distinct words: supplications (asking for specific needs), prayers (general communication with God), intercessions (standing in the gap for others), and thanksgivings (expressing gratitude). Together, they show the fullness and richness of our prayer life.

This verse invites us into a wider, more compassionate perspective. When we bring others before God, especially those who may be hard to pray for, our hearts are shaped by His love. It also reinforces that prayer isn't passive—it is powerful. It’s the first thing, not the last resort.

May we be people who pray first and pray for all.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer. Teach us to come before You not only with our own needs but with hearts full of concern for others. Help us to offer supplications for those in need, to intercede for those in crisis, to give thanks in all circumstances, and to pray faithfully for all people—even those we struggle to understand or forgive. Expand our love through our prayers, and may our words before You bring peace, healing, and hope to the world around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
