Unchanging God in a Changing World
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Most of us enjoy the changes we choose. A fresh haircut, a new job opportunity, the start of a long-awaited vacation, or the thrill of beginning a new hobby. Personally, I love the changes that come with the arrival of fall — the crispness in the air, cooler nights, the return of pumpkin lattes, and the breathtaking transformation of trees clothed in rich shades of amber, crimson, and gold.
My heart is especially full lately as my family celebrated the birth of my niece’s first daughter. She was prayed for seven months before she arrived and is a sweet addition to the family, along with her two wonderful brothers.
But not all change is welcome. Sometimes, change arrives uninvited — a friend receives a life-altering diagnosis, a loved one loses a job, the economy tightens its grip on our finances, or the news is filled with stories of violence, hatred, and war. These changes shake us. They remind us of how fragile and unpredictable life can be.
And yet, in the midst of all this, we are anchored by a truth that does not shift with time or circumstance. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
God’s love does not waver. His faithfulness is not dependent on the economy, world peace, or even our circumstances. His promises, written long ago, are still true for us today. In a world that constantly changes - sometimes beautifully, sometimes painfully , we are held steady by the One who never does.
When the ground beneath us feels unsteady, we can rest in the security of God’s unchanging nature. His heart toward us remains constant, His Word remains true, and His presence remains near.
Lord Jesus, thank You for being our unchanging Rock in a world full of shifting seasons. When we celebrate, You are with us. When we grieve, You hold us. Help us to lean into Your faithfulness when change feels overwhelming, and to rejoice in Your promises that never fail. Thank You that Your love, mercy, and grace are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.
