Often Without Words
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
God’s creation is all around us. With changing leaves, sunflowers in the gardens, goldenrod beside the road, bucks with shiny antlers, squirrels burying nuts for the winter ahead; we are forced to accept the fact that autumn is here, and the cold days of winter are approaching. Without a word, God speaks to us. Heidi Gaul (Mornings with Jesus) tells us about her mountaintop experience.
*****
Recently, my husband and I followed a trail through meadows and forested land. Our goal was to reach the top of Mary’s Peak, the highest mountain in Oregon’s Coast range. The trail we hiked proved easy and wide enough for us to walk side by side. We stopped several times to enjoy the scenery. Fog rolled in almost as quickly as we climbed and our concern grew. What could we possible see from the top?
The answer came to us as we reached the summit. A panorama as soft and elegant as down, as stunning and magnificent as the soaring of an eagle. We were on top of the world. Our view from above the clouds continued as far as our eyes could see. Mile after mile of undulating whiteness hid the busyness and the stark reality of our workaday world. Sounds were muffled in the fog we’d risen above. It was as if Jesus had wrapped all our cares in cotton batting.
Jesus doesn’t need mountain tops and cloud cover to connect with us. His peace is available every day, no matter what circumstance we encounter. His touch can be as sublime as the panorama atop a peak or as simple as a sigh when I read a familiar Bibe verse. He speaks to me in ways I can hear Him, often without words.
Lord Jesus, help us to be more in touch with You, Thank You for all of Your creation and please open our eyes to see and experience more. AMEN.
