…And the Wind Blows

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. John 3:8 (ESV)

As I sit here at my writing desk, I am fully aware of the wind blowing outside. It stirs up little cyclones of diamonds and majestically swirls and twirls the light snow across the field. The birds cling tightly to the feeders. The squirrels’ tails swing wildly but that does not deter their feasting. I often wonder where the birds sleep at night and how do they hang on with these mighty gusts howling around them. Where is their safe place?

We can see the effects of wind but we cannot see the wind. Isn’t that just like God? We can see what He does, but we can’t see Him doing it. Feeling the strength He gives us is different than watching Him. Acknowledging His healing touch is not the same as observing His hand on us and hearing Him say, “Be healed!”

The wind is a mystery to me! Some things we simply must accept by faith. Notice I said some. It is unwise to be blown around without God’s word as an anchor. Ephesians 4:13-15 (ESV) tells us, Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.

Are we hanging on for dear life or braving each storm with confidence that God is with us? When the wind is howling, are we tethered tightly to Him? Is He your safe place?

For a short period of time, it might be kind of fun to go where the wind takes us. However, that free-spirited lifestyle could also be very painful as we bump into objects willy-nilly.

No, I think we are better off living by faith and being protected by His everlasting love.

Rooted in Christ

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our safe place. Please teach us how to anchor our hearts in You. AMEN.
