Winter Blahs

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.  Psalm 118:24 (ESV)

ME: We are not even halfway through the winter season and I am already uneasy! My body doesn’t like the bitter cold. I’m terrified of walking in the snow because I don’t feel safe. I don’t find any beauty in all the mud. But Michael has been wonderful. He can tell when I’m feeling anxious about using my cane. I am dealing with a lot right now and I want spring to get here soon.

JESUS: I do not rush the seasons. My Father ordained them. It is what it is! However, I do understand your concerns.

ME: I sat at my writing desk today and watched the gold finches hurrying to and fro at the feeders. Their winter attire is not very pretty—in fact they are rather blah.

JESUS: But spring is coming and they will again become a vibrant yellow. Why is your spirit so downcast? Do you not have all that you need? You have a warm home, food in the cupboards, a loving husband and I offer you the promise of spring. What are you lacking?

ME: Well, when you put it that way, I’m good. This is just not a pretty time of year and I become…sort of irritable.

JESUS: The gold finches are not complaining. In fact, they do not even know that they are brown right now. While you can put your feelings into words, they are quietly content. Perhaps you might want to consider simply being grateful for what you have. Thank Me for this time of restoration and rejuvenation.

ME: How can I be thankful for bitter cold weather, negative temperatures, severe weather warnings and brutal winds? It’s a bit much…don’t You think?

JESUS: If these little birds can survive out in the cold, you can find something to appreciate. My precious child, you sound harsh like the wind.

ME: I don’t mean to sound like that. Life is not what I expected and I’m feeling a little housebound and yet I love being at home. Going out right now causes me intense anxiety.

JESUS: The time will pass quickly once you start praising Me for each day. You made a connection with nature today. Remember the gold finches that will go from brown to radiant yellow—when the time is right. Decide to be content in this day and discover My joy.

ME: So, when is the right time?

JESUS: Now!
