Faithfulness Without Loopholes
The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:22–23
I visit my local coffee shop drive-thru every day and order a small hot black coffee in a medium-sized cup. I need the larger cup so I don’t spill my hot energy elixir while carrying it into church and maneuvering my walker. Recently, the store manager informed me that they could no longer give me a medium cup for a small coffee order because it would throw off their cup count. “You need to count the cups, can I pay the price difference for the bigger cup?” I asked, almost laughing. “No, there is no way around the AI system, and you’re messing it up,” he informed me.
I drove away thinking about how determined we humans can be to find a loophole when a rule doesn’t seem to make sense. Sometimes we look for a way around the rules because we believe our circumstances deserve an exception. Other times, we search for loopholes because obedience is inconvenient, costly, or simply not what we want to do.
But what about our relationship with God? Have we ever tried to negotiate our way around His instructions? Have we ever justified a little dishonesty, excused an unkind word, or postponed doing what we know is right because we thought our circumstances were different?
Thankfully, God’s faithfulness is not dependent on our ability to find a loophole. He does not change His character to accommodate our excuses. His promises remain true, His mercy is renewed every morning, and His love does not fluctuate with our behavior.
Unlike a computer system that follows a set of programmed rules, God sees the whole picture. He knows our intentions, understands our limitations, and recognizes our genuine needs. We can come to Him honestly, asking for wisdom and grace, rather than trying to manipulate circumstances to get our own way.
Jesus continually reminded people that compassion, mercy, and love matter deeply to God. When things don’t go the way we want, are we seeking a reasonable solution, or are we simply looking for a way to avoid doing what is right?
God has been faithful to us even when we have been less than faithful to Him. What a wonderful reason to respond with honesty, obedience, and gratitude! We do not have to outsmart God, negotiate His love, or search for loopholes in His promises. We can trust Him completely.
And tomorrow morning, I may just have to remember that as I want to ask for that medium cup again!
Faithful and loving God, thank You for Your mercies that are new every morning. Forgive us when we look for loopholes instead of seeking Your will. Help us recognize the difference between a genuine need and an excuse, and give us hearts that value honesty, compassion, and obedience. When Your instructions challenge us, help us trust Your wisdom. When life seems unfair or unnecessarily complicated, remind us that Your faithfulness never fails. May our words and actions reflect Your grace to everyone we meet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
