The Best Valentine
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1 (NIV)
When I was a child, I remember waiting with bated breath to see how many Valentines Day cards I received from my classmates. I hoped desperately it would be an acceptable number to match what my friends got. I am so glad that God's expressions of love can not be counted and far exceeds our expectations.
As children, we often measure love by what we receive—how many cards, how many affirmations, how many signs that we are noticed and valued. Even as adults, it can be easy to count expressions of love and wonder if we are truly cherished. But God’s love does not come in limited quantities. It is not dependent on popularity, performance, or comparison. His love is abundant, immeasurable, and freely given.
The greatest expression of that love is found in Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son” (John 3:16). In Jesus, God gave us the ultimate Valentine—not a paper card or sweet sentiment, but a Savior. Through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, we see love written not in ink, but in sacrifice.
Unlike earthly valentines that may fade or be forgotten, God’s love in Christ is eternal. It does not change with our moods, mistakes, or circumstances. Romans 8 reminds us that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. That means no failure, no fear, no disappointment can erase His affection for us.
On Valentine’s Day, while we may exchange cards, flowers, or words of affirmation, let us remember the love that surpasses all others. In Jesus, we are fully known and fully loved. We are chosen, redeemed, and called children of God. That is the ultimate Valentine we will ever receive.
May we rest in that love today—no longer counting to see if we measure up, but rejoicing because Christ’s love has already declared us precious beyond measure.
Heavenly Father, thank You for lavishing Your love upon us and calling us Your children. Thank You for the indescribable gift of Jesus Christ, the ultimate expression of Your heart toward us. Help us to receive Your love fully and to rest in the security of knowing we are cherished beyond measure. Teach us to share that same selfless, faithful love with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
