My Soul Gets Tired

Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. Psalm 116:7 (NIV)

ME: Jesus, I think I am in need of some rest. I know that sounds odd coming from someone who takes a nap every day. But I am not talking about that kind of rest.

JESUS: I hear what you are telling Me. Can you expand on that?

ME: Well, I feel like my days are so busy with stuff like laundry, cooking, cleaning, writing, PT, choir stuff, and it all takes me longer than it did six months ago. Don’t get me wrong, I am so grateful that I am doing better and can do these things, but I get to the end of the day and wonder where You’ve been.

JESUS: I have not budged an inch. You are the one in flux.

ME: In my heart I know that very well but during the day, I often miss You. These days leading up to Holy week, I want them to mean more. I want to feel more of Your Presence. I can attend all the services and do the suggested readings, but I’m not yet convinced that will be enough. What am I missing?

JESUS: You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart (Jer. 29:13, NIV). You are holding back. You say you are weighed down with items on your to-do list, however, who made that list? It wasn’t Me! I continue to invite you to cast your burdens upon Me. I will take care of you. But you do not do that easily. Your days are full of worry, anxiety, and fears about things that may never happen.

ME: Oh, Jesus! You are right. I see what I am doing…but I don’t know how to change.

JESUS: Yes, My precious child. Your faulty thinking has led you to the conclusion that I need help. If you could stop that presumption, you will begin to understand the concept of resting in Me. Slow your breathing, slow your mind, make that desire burn with a deep passion.

ME: I need to be reminded that You have always been good to me.

JESUS: Yes, and I will continue. Trust Me! I love you and want the best for you.

ME: Maybe I should memorize that verse.

JESUS: That would be a great beginning.

Rest for My Soul
