Homesick for Heaven
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20 ESV)
“I’m too tired to go on. Just take me home NOW!"
“I don’t like what’s happening in my life. It’s a mess! Help me fix it or take me home.”
“Please come back today. I want to go home.”
In all honesty, I have said these words at the top of my lungs. Notice, I am here writing this, so He did not take my requests seriously. Also look at how selfish and demanding these statements appear. Life becomes so chaotic, blurry, and fast-paced that we are overwhelmed and tired out, ready for an extended vacation but that isn’t even on the radar. We sigh!
The older we get, the closer to heaven we are. Sometimes my heart aches to leave this place with all the news of war, famine, fires, weather disasters, senseless crimes, and the list goes on. But obviously, my room isn’t quite ready yet because He hasn’t called me home. That isn’t how it goes, but it still makes me giggle.
There are so many in heaven that I want to walk and talk with—like Moses. How did he put up with those whiney Israelites for forty years? David, how did such an uneducated kid develop a significantly deep relationship (as king) with God? Abigail, (wife of a stingy man), how did she know how much food to bring to David’s exhausted army? Saul, what did he think and feel when Jesus spoke to him on the Damascus Road? These are but a few. I have many questions—some superficial and lots more profoundly deep.
We are just passing through for this is not our final destination. However, wouldn’t it be nice if the ride was not so bumpy? Sometimes the potholes throw us right out of our seats and we are injured. Yes, we heal with His help, but pain is usually involved. Oh wait, isn’t that where we tend to learn some valuable life lessons?
As Phil Wickham sings, “I want to see my children run to Your arms.” This is for children, grands, fosters, cousins, and others. To know that I’ll spend eternity with my loved ones means the world to me. How about you?
Every day gives us another chance! Right now, we can only imagine but one day soon, it will be reality.
I am homesick for heaven.
Lord Jesus, thank You for glimpses of our eternal home. Help us use each day for Your glory and never tire of doing good to honor You. AMEN.
