Be Where Your Feet Are
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 (NIV)
I know I am not alone when I say that there are many days when I am not present. My body shows up, but my mind is elsewhere—I’m not sure where, but when I can't remember where I’ve been or what I’ve done or why, I have not invested myself into that day. Alzheimer’s? No! Too tired? Perhaps. Old age? Maybe. However, my desire is to be where my feet are.
What if each moment that we live has been carefully created for us? We get sidetracked so easily. My usual distractions are the grocery list, the family, and choir music selection. I am plagued with these thoughts that take me away from the present moment—especially when I’m praying or listening to someone drone on and on.
We all need people. By trying to skip over our days, we miss many blessings. In essence, be where your feet are is a way of saying don’t worry about tomorrow. Writing about it and doing it are not the same—like most, I struggle with this.
Be where you are! Erase those preconceived notions of trying to be where you think you should be. We are all guilty of this and it causes great stress in our lives. It is vitally important to be faithfully present in every day—every experience. Why do we shy away from this? He is always with us. In our minds we know this is the truth, but the message is slow to reach our hearts.
Proverbs 4:26: Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.
Granted, we have not seen His early miracles, nor have we heard His voice teaching beside the sea. We haven’t partaken of the 5 loaves and 2 fishes. Would we have even been spiritually present for those events? Might there have been an ah-ha epiphany moment? Our feet might have been there, but would we still be thinking about the grocery list, family, and sacred songs?
Today, we can humbly be present—fully present—every day because we believe.
Psalm 46:10: Be still, and know that I am God.
Loving Lord, thank You for reminding us to be where our feet are. Teach us to stay alert, remain humble, and stop worrying about tomorrow. Let us rejoice in this day! AMEN.
