Get Out of My Head

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

My mind can be a prison. I don’t like being there sometimes because I bump up against ugly, unloving, jealous, and ungodly thoughts. They just sort of sneak in and slam the steel bars down around me. My initial reaction is always one of fear. “I’m trapped; I need to get out of here. NOW!” But try as I might, with my human strength, the door won’t budge.

What are these psychological sentries? They are the residue from decisions and/or mistakes I’ve made recently and those far in the past. I describe them as the invisible but audible ones that speak unkind words. Yes, I know they are lies but when I’m exhausted, they seem to weigh me down and they won’t let go.

“You’re an idiot! What gave you the idea you could do this well?”

“You’re too old and forgetful to keep this job.”

“You’ll never get out of debt. You’ll have to work until the day of your funeral.”

“Why did you think you could get away from your past?

These are just a few of the words spoken in my ear with gnarly, hideous tones.

I cower in the corner.

Then, I look up!

His hand reaches down to me and He gently smiles at me.

JESUS: Get up, My child. (He helps me stand.) Do not listen. You are Mine and I will never let you go.

ME: Oh! Thank You for loving me and breaking me out of here.

JESUS: What have I told you all along about this journey?

ME: You have told me many things but I am so tired right now. I guess I just forgot.

JESUS: Let’s review some of them again. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:12, ESV). Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). I can do all things through him who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). Is that enough or do you need more?

ME: I am okay now. I do remember Your words! I just needed to hear Your voice. Thank You!

JESUS: You are most welcome. Now, My child, come and rest.

Dear God
