Growing in Wisdom and Relationship
Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people. Luke 2:52
As we begin another school year, there are many things we hope our students will learn. We want them to grow in reading, mathematics, science, history, and all the other subjects they will encounter. But there is one kind of wisdom that is more important than anything found in a textbook: knowing God and growing in our relationship with Him.
In Luke 2, we meet Jesus when He was just twelve years old. His family traveled to Jerusalem, and afterward Mary and Joseph discovered that Jesus was not with them as they headed home. They eventually found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. Everyone who heard Him was amazed at His understanding and His answers.
Think about that for a moment: Jesus was twelve years old, and He had a profound understanding of the things of God. He listened. He asked questions. He learned. He understood that His heavenly Father's business mattered most.
That is a wonderful example for students as they begin a new school year.
School isn't simply a place where we collect information. It is an opportunity to develop the minds and abilities God has given us. We can honor God by working hard, asking good questions, listening to their teachers, treating others with kindness, and seeking wisdom.
We are reminded that learning and growing are not only for the classroom. After Jesus returned home, Scripture says that He continued to grow in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and people.
God wants us all to continue growing in wisdom, no matter what our age.
Jesus, help us to grow in wisdom, in faith, and in love for You. Amen.
