Embracing the Seasons of Life
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
There is something special about this time of year. Summer is still very much with us; the warm afternoons, the long evenings, the abundance of gardens and farmers’ markets, and perhaps a few more days to enjoy a slower pace. Yet, if we pay attention, we can sense that a change is coming. The mornings are a little cooler. The days are gradually growing shorter. The first hints of autumn are beginning to appear.
So, as we enjoy these final days of summer, perhaps we can resist the temptation to rush into fall. There is still beauty and blessing in the season we are living in right now.
As Christians, we know something about seasons. Not only the seasons of the calendar year, but the many seasons of life and faith. We give thanks for summer, not because it lasts forever, but precisely because it does not. And then, when autumn arrives, we can welcome it with open hearts, gratitude and anticipation.
Our lives are much the same.
There are seasons of joy and seasons of sorrow, seasons of growth and seasons of waiting, seasons when our path seems clear and others when we can see only a few steps ahead. There are times when we feel strong in our faith and times when faith feels more like quietly holding on to God’s promises.
Through every season, God remains faithful.
The good news of our faith is that we do not have to navigate life’s changing seasons alone. The God who meets us in summer meets us in autumn. The God who walks with us through seasons of abundance also walks with us through seasons of uncertainty. And in every season, Christ calls us to trust, to grow, to love our neighbors, and to recognize the blessings that surround us.
Perhaps the changing seasons can remind us, too, that faith is not about staying exactly where we are. God is continually shaping us. Just as creation moves through its God-given rhythms, we, too, are invited to grow and change. Sometimes that means stepping into something new. Sometimes it means resting. Sometimes it means releasing something we have carried for too long. And sometimes it simply means being present and grateful for where God has placed us today.
Whatever season you find yourself in right now, remember this: God is there.
Creator God, may we have eyes to see the beauty of this season, hearts ready to receive the blessings of the next, and faith to trust the One who holds every season, and every one of us in His loving hands. Amen.
