Simple Gifts
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16
ME: What am I going to give people as gifts this year? I’ve been seriously thinking about this, and I am stumped. Usually, I have a theme like artwork, pictures, dried herbs from my garden, or something I’ve made.
JESUS: You still have time.
ME: Yes, but this year I don’t have the energy. At least right now I am not hyped about the “big day.”
JESUS: Who says you must be enthusiastic? When hype happens, most people spend way too much, buy things they don’t want or need, and make lots of excuses rationalizing what they have just done. I do not want you to complicate your life.
ME: I have no idea what You are trying to tell me. Please explain it another way.
JESUS: Okay. Let your giving come from your heart—not your wallet.
ME: But I should buy something for everyone.
JESUS: Says who? You are not listening to Me! Keep it simple this year.
ME: Wait…please define simple from Your perspective.
JESUS: Why don’t you tell Me what a gift from your heart might look like.
ME: Well, I could make some homemade cookies, fudge, or share a favorite recipe and get the ingredients or a gift card to buy the stuff. Maybe I could babysit the younger grands so mom and dad could go out for the evening. I think taking the teen grands for an outing might prove to be an adventure. Finding the time in everyone’s schedule might be tough though.
JESUS: You’re getting it! Simple is always better. People tend to overspend this time of year on expensive things that are not needed, liked, or appreciated. Let Me help you make plans.
ME: You would really do that for me? Are You serious? I mean, aren’t You busy with Gaza, Ukraine and the Congo and US Politics? My issue is so trivial.
JESUS: A loving Father will do anything to help His precious child.
ME: Alright. I am not going crazy this year. I will give heartfelt gifts that have meaning and will be remembered. Now I am getting excited!
JESUS: Why am I not surprised?
