Rest Is Not Laziness
The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. Mark 6:30-32 (ESV)
Growing up on a farm meant that there was always plenty to do. If my grandmother saw me sitting in a lounge chair, she would tell me to get my lazy behind busy and go find something to do. To me, I interpreted that to mean I was a lazy kid. To this day at age 73, I cannot just sit and watch a TV program. My hands must be busy. I often feel guilty when I need a nap. Having fun is not one of my priorities. I guess this has all been learned from my devoted, Christian grandmother.
When I read the verses above, I notice that Jesus didn’t beg His disciples to rest, He commanded it, and they obeyed. Why then, is it so difficult for us to take a time out, to eat and to just be?
We had dental appointments in Royersford last week and stayed overnight with my daughter. I noticed her calendar hanging in the kitchen. Every day was packed with small writing and in different colors for the kids. I had to ask myself: Does being on the go ever equate to contentment or peace?
If we hit the pause button, is it to reclaim the sacred stillness that brings us His Peace or do we take time off just when we are sick? Only you can answer that question. But your response shows up in your body language, facial expressions, and commitments. That brings us to another stop sign. Why do we think that we must be on every church committee and if we miss a meeting we’ll be marched off to the gallows? Rest is not laziness especially in church work. Check your motivation before it is too late. Who and what are you working for and why?
This devotion was inspired by my pastor, Liz Jackson, and she had my full attention from beginning to end. Hopefully, you too can identify with this because it is never too late to stop and reclaim your sacred stillness.
Gracious and Loving Lord, thank You for stop signs. When life gets out of control, You remind us to stop and come away with You to rest. Please teach us how to get rid of guilt when we are just too tired to go on. Let us find rest and peace in You. AMEN.
