God Nods

Out of his fullness we have received grace in place of grace already given. John 1:16 (NIV)

Flight delays and overcrowded flights are not something I look forward to when flying. Really, how many times can one walk the corridors lined with expensive shops and pricey souvenirs? When every seat is taken, there is always a big shove at the end to get things in the overhead compartments. Flying is a time saver but oh, so exhausting! Barbara Lumpkins Walls (Mornings with Jesus) shares a life lesson she learned while flying.

I was a little apprehensive about a work trip to Chicago because of the numerous flight delays and cancellations that were occurring regularly. As usual before I left, I prayed for smooth and safe travel. Unlike several of my colleagues, I had no problem reaching my destination.

But on the return trip to Washington, DC, I faced flight delays. The gate agent warned us that the plane was totally booked. I prepared myself to be scrunched up in my window seat for the two-hour flight. A young man came to sit next to me. We greeted each other and watched as the other passengers boarded. The flow of people started to slow down. The guy next to me and I looked at each other—could it be on a packed flight that we would have an empty seat on our row and be able to stretch out? The flight attendant closed the door. The young man and I grinned and fist bumped each other as he moved to the aisle seat. God’s favor strikes again!

I’ve learned to recognize those little, ordinary blessings as “God Nods,” unexpected assurances of Jesus’s grace and presence with me. It’s when I’m running late and the traffic opens up so I can arrive to an appointment on time. Or when I’m feeling burdened and a stranger on the street tells me to smile because Jesus loves me. Jesus gives signals that He sees me, knows what I need, and provides it in some way. Sometimes it’s even an empty middle seat on a packed flight.

FAITH STEP: Be on the lookout for “God nods” today and thank Jesus when they happen.

Counting My Blessings

Loving Lord, Your blessings are too numerous to count but they still keep coming. Please make us aware of Your overflowing love and remind us to be eternally grateful. AMEN.
