Chicks in a Row

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV)

Many of you may have been aware of Michael’s health issues and the need for emergency surgery last month. It was not an easy month to say the very least. There were many added responsibilities such as my new job, having pullets that needed tending with fresh water and food multiple times a day. They also wanted to be out of the coop and explore. Add to that feeding the deer twice a day; figuring ways to get 50 lb. bags out of the car and into the storage area. You get the idea. Yes, I struggled but remained victorious.

The first day I was on chick round up duty (which meant getting them all into a carrying crate to tote them back to the coop), I was faced with an overwhelming task. I sat down in the garden and prayed: “Lord Jesus, I love these chicks and You gave them to me to take care of. This was something that Michael used to do. Please help me! I don’t know how to do this.”

Walking slowly around the bottom edge of the garden, I saw them do something I will never forget. They all got in a line and walked into the carrier. I stood there crying, laughing and thanking God for this supernatural moment.

Sometimes simple prayers are the best. “Help!” That is what I was really trying to say.

We are always grateful if the spontaneous prayers are answered quickly. But how about the ones that take years? Impatience sneaks in, and there are those snarky questions as to what’s taking so long.

Our loving Father has three answers: yes, no, and wait. Most of us can deal with the first two but the wait is a challenge.

Michael is recovering slowly and there seems to finally be a routine to each day. Today the chicks are free-range and every day is something new.  I pray protection for them from predators (foxes, bears, and hawks). So far, so good. Through this past month, my faith has deepened and I am eternally grateful for the stories I must share with listening ears.

We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations

Loving Father, thank You for all the life-lessons You provide. Let us always remember to bring our needs to You and wait patiently. We thank You for Your blessings in the wait. AMEN.
