Guided by God's Loving Eye

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Psalm 32:8

Yesterday, I had to drive about 30 miles to a town I wasn’t familiar with. As usual, I turned to the Waze app on my phone to guide me. There were a few times when I looked at the route and thought, “Is this really the best way to get there?” Sometimes it seemed like Waze was taking me on a longer or less direct route than I would have chosen. But even when I questioned the directions, I followed them because I trusted that the app knew the way.

How often do we do the same thing with God? He tells us which way to go, but sometimes His direction doesn’t make sense to us. We may wonder why He is allowing a particular circumstance, why a door has closed, or why the path ahead seems to take an unexpected turn.

Yet Psalm 32:8 gives us a beautiful promise. God doesn't simply point us in a direction and leave us to figure things out on our own. He instructs us. He teaches us. He counsels us. And He watches over us with His loving eye.

Unlike a navigation app, God knows not only the destination but also us. He knows our needs, our weaknesses, our fears, and what is best for us. Even when we cannot see where the road is leading, we can trust the One who does.

As Lutherans, we know that God's greatest direction and promise comes to us through His Word. There He continually points us to Christ, who has gone before us, forgiven our sins, and promises to remain with us every step of the way.

So when God's path seems unfamiliar or His directions don't seem to make sense, we don't need to panic. We can listen to His Word, trust His promises, and follow where He leads, knowing that His loving eye is always on us.

Heavenly Father, thank You for guiding and directing our lives. When we are uncertain about the road ahead, help us trust Your wisdom rather than our own. Lead us through Your Word, keep our eyes focused on Jesus, and remind us that Your loving eye is always upon us. Give us faith to follow wherever You lead. In Jesus' name, Amen.
