On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand

Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Psalm 62:6 (NLT)

For Easter, the choir sang “In Christ Alone” with “The Solid Rock”. This anthem overflows with several different statements and emotions. First, there is the proclamation that David made, “He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.” In our world today, are we easily swayed to ponder or even do ungodly things? How easily are we moved when difficulties pile up? He is our rock, our foundation, but do we keep our feet firmly planted? I know there are times when that rock seems a little mossy to me and I start to slide. But I know it is solid and I am the one with the slippery feet.

The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior (Psalm 18:46, NIV)! This Rock is an image of both salvation and protection. To climb up on this Rock, we must first surrender our lives to Jesus. It is then that we can seek and claim His shelter as our own. When the storms come, and they will, we are shielded by His defense. Does that mean we won’t have moments of fear and even doubt? No, we will have it all, but standing firmly on the solid Rock gives us hope.

Building a home on sandy soil is unwise! It would be like hearing or reading God’s word and ignoring it. Sooner or later, the storms will erode the foundation, and all will be lost—including you. Nothing can ever pluck us from His hand…unless we allow it.

Sinking sands are not just storms of nature. They can be temptations of this world, idols, social climbing—whatever priorities are placed in front of Jesus. Following and being active in our faith ensures us that we won’t be humiliated or shamed in front of Him for our thoughts and actions. I firmly believe that hope and love are active verbs. We never want to be caught in the sinking sands.

Please take a sacred pause and claim this verse as your own. Make this your prayer today.

My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior. 2 Samuel 22:3 (NIV)
