Our Good Shepherd

But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. John 10:2–3 (NLT)

In these words, we’re given a deeply personal picture of Christ as our Good Shepherd. He is not distant or indifferent—He enters rightly, calls gently, and leads intentionally. What stands out most is that the sheep hear his voice. This isn’t a forced obedience or a fearful following; it’s a relationship built on recognition, trust, and love.

Christ knows His people by name. That means He knows your heart, your struggles, your joys, and your fears. And still, He calls you. His voice comes through Scripture, through the quiet prompting of the Spirit, and sometimes through the wise counsel of others. But recognizing His voice requires attentiveness. In a world full of noise and competing influences, we learn to discern Him by spending time with Him.

Following the Shepherd isn’t always about having the full map—it’s about trusting the One who leads. Sheep don’t follow because they understand everything ahead; they follow because they trust the shepherd’s care. In the same way, we are invited to walk with Christ daily, trusting His goodness even when the path is unclear.

And as we follow, something beautiful happens: our love for Him grows. What begins as trust deepens into devotion. We don’t just obey His voice—we long for it.
Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, thank You for calling us by name and leading us with care and compassion. Teach us to recognize Your voice above all others. Quiet the distractions around us and within us, so we may hear You clearly. Help us to follow You with trust, even when we don’t understand what is ahead. Grow in us a deeper love for You, that we may walk closely with You each day. Lead us in Your truth, and keep us near Your heart. Amen.
