Called by Mercy

When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, 'Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?' On hearing this, Jesus said, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. ... For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.'" Matthew 9:11-13 (NIV)

When Jesus called Matthew, He chose someone most people would have overlooked or rejected. Matthew was a tax collector, a profession associated with greed, corruption, and betrayal. To many, he was an outsider who had disqualified himself from God's favor. Yet Jesus walked right up to Matthew's tax booth and said, "Follow Me."

What is remarkable is not only that Jesus called Matthew, but what happened next. Matthew invited Jesus to his home, and soon the room was filled with his friends, other tax collectors and people known as sinners. These were not the people religious leaders expected a holy teacher to spend time with. But Jesus did not avoid them. He sat at their table, shared a meal with them, and welcomed them into His presence.

The Pharisees could only see people's failures. Jesus saw people who needed mercy.

God's grace is not reserved for those who have everything together. Jesus came specifically for those who know they need Him. His love reaches into the lives of people who feel unworthy, ashamed, forgotten, or beyond hope. He is not repelled by our brokenness; He moves toward it with compassion.

Many people carry the quiet belief that they are not good enough for God—that their mistakes are too great, their past too messy, or their failures too frequent. Matthew's story tells a different story. Jesus calls people before they have cleaned themselves up.

The same Savior who called Matthew still calls people today. He sees beyond labels, beyond failures, and beyond what others think. He sees hearts that need His grace. No one is too far gone for His love. No one is beyond the reach of His mercy.

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your amazing mercy. Thank You that You called Matthew and welcomed those whom others rejected. Help us to believe that Your grace is greater than my failures and to rest in Your unfailing love. Teach me to extend that same mercy to others. Thank You for seeking and saving those who need You most. Amen.
