Tethered to What?
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me, you can do nothing. John 15:5 (ESV)
The first cell phone I ever purchased was in January 2002. I survived without it and I was sure I did not really need it. I saw many around me who received multiple calls in short periods of time, or they made numerous calls and I figured they were just showing off or trying to be cool. I didn’t want to be either. Truth is, even today I don’t keep it on much. When I’m writing, I turn it over so I can’t see what’s happening or who is trying to get my attention. Barbranda Lumpkins Walls (Mornings with Jesus) has a strong message for all of us.

While waiting on the platform in a busy train station, I noticed that nearly everyone had a phone in their hand. Some wore earbuds to listen to music. Others were texting. A few scrolled through social media feeds. And still others were having phone conversations. Literally hundreds of people around me were engrossed in their smart-phones.
I have to admit that I’m often guilty of being glued to my mobile phone. I’ll pull it out during my work commute to check email, make to-do lists, or listen to an audiobook. But on this day, seeing so many folks gripping their phones, I had to ask myself if I am that attached to Jesus, the true vine. Am I tethered to my phone, or am I seeking, listening, and talking to Jesus? Well, not all the time. But instead of aimlessly passing the time on my phone, I could spend those minutes connecting with Jesus in prayer or praising Him by quietly humming a worship song.
I believe I can better use my so-called idle time to further strengthen my bond with Jesus and cut the cord on those worldly things that draw me away from Him. I know my soul and spirit will certainly blossom by being unplugged.
FAITH STEP: Intentionally put away your phone the next time you wait in a line or for an appointment. Use the idle time instead to connect with Jesus.
Heavenly Father, thank You for modern technology. Help us to only be tethered to you and not the social media world. Lord, let us use our idle time to get to know You better. AMEN.
