Jesus, I Was Wondering…
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Proverbs 19:21 (ESV)
ME: Jesus, how will I know when I have completed my purpose here on earth?
JESUS: You will know.
ME: But how? What if my purpose is different than Yours? I mean, what if I didn’t get it right and all this time You had something else You wanted me to do?
JESUS: You will know.
ME: Come on, Jesus, You aren’t being very helpful here!
JESUS: What do you think your purpose in life might be?
ME: I’m not sure I want to share my thoughts with You. What if I’m wrong?
JESUS: I already know your thoughts so do not feel anxious or afraid to say them out loud.
ME: Okay, I think my purpose has been to teach children, be kind, show respect, love on others, earnestly pray for folks and situations, write devotions and direct music.
JESUS: You are off to a good start but you are missing some important issues. Let me just list a few and then you can tell me how you are doing. You were created to glorify My Father, love God and others, walk humbly and justly. How are you feeling so far?
ME: Ahhhh…Ummm…
JESUS: But wait, there is more. Your purpose is to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19, ESV).
ME: But You’ve listed different kinds of things. What You’ve spoken of is how to live every day.
JESUS: Well, as you have had many jobs during your lifetime, have you not purposefully done all that I have asked you to do? When you were teaching, did you not pray for those children who were going through some difficult situations? I have heard you worship Me in song. I see what you write about Me which brings clarity and hope to many.
ME: Yes, I at least think I did/do. All along, I’ve been thinking that my purpose is just one special skill or talent.
JESUS: My dear child, you are walking in your purpose. Your purpose is not something grand you do but using that Dunamis power (ability) to faithfully fulfill even the smallest task set before you.
ME: So, what am I supposed to do now?
JESUS: Just keep walking and talking, singing praises, writing devotions, loving others, and sharing. Are you capable and able!
ME: Yes! Now I have a purpose.
