Draw Near
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8 (ESV)
James' words are both an invitation and a call to repentance. We do not draw near to God because we have made ourselves worthy. We come because God has first drawn near to us in Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, our sins are forgiven, and we are welcomed into the Father's presence.
We know that repentance is a daily rhythm of the Christian life. Each day we turn away from sin and turn again to Christ, trusting not in our own efforts but in His mercy. James reminds us that a divided heart cannot find lasting peace, but a heart centered on Christ receives His grace, forgiveness, and strength.
Today, hear God's gracious invitation. Come to Him in His Word, in prayer, and in the promises of your Baptism. As you draw near to Him in faith, you can be confident that He is near to you, sustaining you with His steadfast love.
Gracious Father, thank You for drawing near to us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Forgive us when our hearts wander and when we trust in ourselves instead of You. Create in us clean hearts, renew our faith, and help us to live each day in Your grace, goodness and forgiveness. Keep us close to You through Your Word and Spirit. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
