Blessings That Come With Four Paws
The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. Psalm 145:9
God has a beautiful way of reminding us of His love through the simplest and most unexpected blessings. The joy of children playing, a great cup of coffee, and sometimes, those blessings have four paws, a wet nose, a wagging tail. In my case, the blessing has orange and white fur, a soft purr and the name Abby.
For the past three years, my mornings have begun with me waking up to find Abby sleeping peacefully on my chest. Before I even get out of bed, before the day begins with all of its responsibilities and distractions, I am reminded of a gift God has given me. Her warm presence and soft purring have become a quiet invitation to pause and give thanks.
So my first prayer of the day begins the same way: thanking God for another day of life, filled with His presence and Abby’s affection.
There is something sacred about the unconditional love our pets give us. They do not care about our accomplishments, our mistakes, our worries, or how productive we were yesterday. They simply delight in being with us. In their own way, they teach us something about being present, about receiving love, and about finding joy in the ordinary moments God places before us.
Our pets can also remind us of the Creator who made them. Their personalities, playfulness, loyalty, curiosity, and capacity to give affection are little reflections of the goodness woven throughout creation. When we care for them, we participate in the kind of compassionate stewardship God calls us to practice toward all He has made.
Perhaps that is one of the special blessings pets bring into our lives: they help us notice God in the moment. A quiet morning. A familiar purr. A joyful greeting at the door. A comforting presence.
These moments may seem small, but God's blessings often arrive that way.
So today, I am grateful not only for Abby, but infinitely more for God who placed her in my life. I am grateful for another morning, another day to experience His presence, and another opportunity to recognize His goodness in the precious creatures He entrusts to our care.
Gracious and loving God, Thank You for the gift of another day and for the countless blessings You place in our lives, both great and small. Thank You for the animals who bring companionship, comfort, laughter, and unconditional affection into our homes. Thank You for the special bond we share with them and for the ways they remind us of the beauty of Your creation. Teach us to be as present and trusting as our pets often are—to receive the moments You have given us rather than worry about the moments yet to come. May we never become too busy to notice the little blessings You place before us. Amen.
