The Glare from the World

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8, NIV

Driving a car east as the sun comes up is not an easy task if we are short and the visor does not come down far enough. There is a blinding glare that can slash our confidence and leave us wondering, “where is the road?” Or how about the frequently visited golf course’s 9th hole facing west as the sun is going down? “Now where exactly is that flag?”

These are temporary vision problems. But how about the glare from the world? The world seems to appear all shiny and bright and yet when we get right down to it, it can be downright dirty. Isn’t it strange how we manage to be drawn into the pathetic enticements of society?

What are we thinking about when we cave into the siren-like call of this world? Are we locked into something that appears beautiful? Do we put another foot up on the shiny ladder of corporate success? Is a new relationship beckoning us to try the greener grass on the other side? Have we visited a different church because of all the overwhelming problems in ours? This all comes from the glare of the world. We can either squint and feel confused or we can hold tight to God’s truth. There is only one right answer with no wiggle room.

The world would like to blind us from seeing all the blessings that we have received from God. It throws us off by pointing out all that we don’t have and then we begin focusing on what we think we should have. After all, we are entitled. Right?

This above verse has some key words that include true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable. Real and honest things. Things that deserve respect. Fair and good choices. Clean and holy thoughts. Things that bring love and peace. Good and praiseworthy acts. 

If we want the glare of the world to go away, we must focus on good thoughts, stop dwelling on harmful things and fill our heads with the goodness of God. It’s all pretty simple, right? No! That is an untruth. In our lives today, the media fills us with messages that are glaring errors. We are called to stay alert and remain tethered to God’s holy word. Even then, there will still be moments of question.

Goodness of God

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and goodness to us. Help us to keep our focus and not give into the glare of this world. We need Your help. AMEN.
