Above the Fog
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10
Last week, as I was driving Rte. 15/99 north between Blossburg and Mansfield, PA, there was this stretch of road that put me above the fog. I was not in the fog, but literally above it. I had never experienced anything like it before. My words got stuck. I couldn’t describe the feeling and I wanted to tell everyone what had happened.
Being in fog gives us feelings of insecurity and uneasiness, especially here in rural PA where we never know when a deer or bear is going to run out to cross the road at 5:30AM or any time during the day or night. Many days I say a simple prayer that goes something like this: Lord Jesus, please send Your angels out before me to clear the roads and get me safely to work. AMEN. My prayers have been answered thus far. Even in the densest fog, I know He is with me.
When we can’t see where we are going, we feel a natural anxiety. Yes, it was breathtaking and beautiful. Really, how many people have had the chance to look down at the fog (and not from an airplane)? I wanted to stop and enjoy what my eyes were seeing. But reality set in! I was in a hurry. Somewhere to be.
We spend way too much time rushing, analyzing and worrying! What would it be like to not have a care in the world? To see nature for what it is? To not dread opening the news app? To see strangers as God’s creation? To simply enjoy something picturesque?
God blesses us with all of nature to enjoy. The autumn colors that are beginning to show up on the mountains, the coolness of the nights and crisp mornings, and even to see the little fawns losing their spots are all His gifts to us.
What do we do with all these things? Being grateful is a good place to start.
I am thankful that I could see something unique and new. To share these thoughts puts things into perspective for me. Sometimes my head gets foggy! But we are able to rise above the fog and see more clearly as we walk with Him daily.
Loving Lord, thank You for opening our eyes to the natural beauty You have provided. Teach us to slow down and just accept these gifts without trying to figure things out. AMEN.
