Call From Home
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. John 10:27 (NKJV)
I cannot add any of my own stories to this one. I won’t even try! Hallie lee (All God’s Creatures) shares a delightful, slightly humorous story of a non-typical day.
*****
Early one morning as I was sitting at my desk, I heard mooing. As in cows. Bovines. Huge creatures that chew their cud, graze in pasture, and generally live on farms. Seeing as how I lived in a subdivision brimming with houses—complete with a well-trafficked street—I suspected I needed more caffeine.
But when I took another swig of coffee, the mooing continued. And grew louder. When I warily glanced out my window, I came face-to-face with the soulful, long-lashed gaze of a thousand-pound cow. I reared back in shock, expecting the beast to do the same, but she just smacked her lips and continued to peruse my landscape. She and twenty or so of her besties.
Should I call wildlife services? 911? As I reached for my phone, a sudden, staccato honk returned my gaze to the window. A pickup truck drove slowly along our street, its driver tooting his horn in a precise beat while calling, “Woowee!” from the window. The familiar sequence drew the cows’ attention from the smorgasbord of shrubbery and soon they formed a convoy behind his truck, their hooves clattering noisily along the paved road as they followed him home.
I later learned that the cows had escaped from their farmer’s pasture nearly a mile away. For days afterward, social media buzzed with pictures and posts about the bovines’ midnight stroll across the area, including a busy intersection not far from my home.
While the community marveled at their surprising journey, I was struck by the poise of the drifting herd. Even as they wandered—clearly lost and in danger—they remained unfazed, certain that their farmer would come a call them home. And he hadn’t failed them.
Our Father won’t fail us either. He’s constantly correcting our paths and leading us out of trouble. Even when we can’t hear Him through the roar of fear and doubt, we are His, and when the time comes, we’ll recognize the sound of His hallowed voice.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and for being a Good God. When we are lost and in danger, please come to us as You have done many times in the past. AMEN.
