The Work of Our Hands
Let the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90:17 (NIV)
Labor Day gives us an opportunity to pause and give thanks for work—the work we do to provide, serve, create, care, teach, build, encourage, and bless others.
Psalm 90:17 reminds us that our work matters to God. And the beautiful thing is that God’s call to meaningful work is not limited by our age, education, experience, physical strength, or particular talents. Whether we are young or old, highly skilled or simply willing to help, God has good work for us to do.
Our abilities may change throughout life, but our usefulness to God never expires. One season may involve building a career; another may involve raising a family, mentoring someone, volunteering, creating beauty, offering a listening ear, or faithfully praying for others. Even the smallest acts of love and service can become significant when placed in God’s hands.
So on this Labor Day, may we not only be thankful for the work we have done, but also ask God to show us the work He has prepared for us today. And may we trust Him to establish the work of our hands—not merely so that we accomplish more, but so that what we do bears lasting fruit for His glory.
Lord, thank You for the gifts, abilities, opportunities, and strength You have given us. Help us recognize the good work You have for us in every season of life. Establish the work of our hands, and use even our ordinary efforts to bless others and honor You. Give us joy in serving and faithfulness in all that You call us to do. Amen.
