Deep, Dark Woods

Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! 1 Chronicles 16:11

ME: Jesus, when I can’t see the forest for the trees, I don’t feel settled or at ease. I want to know exactly what is in there and where it is. Whether it’s a family of raccoons, skunks, or a tired doe, or a curious squirrel, or some rabid animal. I want to know. And then, what if it’s a big old bear just passing through? What if it is a pack of wild dogs or coyotes just waiting for me to enter their territory.

JESUS: And what if it is nothing? What if I am with you every step of the way? Where are these thoughts coming from?

ME: Well, sometimes when Michael and I take a ride, I look deep into the woods and it is dark and I feel uneasy. I can’t make out anything except trees in the foreground.

JESUS: So, are you telling me you are afraid of the dark?

ME: No, of course not. I’m too old for that…it’s not the dark that frightens me, it’s what’s in the dark that I can’t see.

JESUS: But the darkness is a gift I gave to the world as a time for refreshment and rest. The same things exist in the light so why do you feel afraid?

ME: I can see more in the daylight.

JESUS: It sounds to Me like you still have a trust issue. Cling to Me for I am with you wherever you go. What is it that you are not saying?

ME: I want to know what lies ahead for me. I do not like surprises!

JESUS: My dear child, I can tell you that there are no rabid animals, coyotes or bears to worry about! Stay alert, because there might be a skunk or two. I am not mocking you but rather making sure that you understand My Presence. I am nearer than you think! But remember, you are not in control. I am!

ME: Jesus, please forgive me when I forget who You are. You are my Friend and Savior. I know in my head that You are with me. Please engrave this on my heart!

JESUS: Your desire will give you the strength you need.

ME: Jesus, one more question—how many skunks and when?
